At National Women in Transport, we’re always encouraged to see practical steps toward a more inclusive transport industry. The release of the Australasian Railway Association’s (ARA) Rail Gender Equity Charter marks an important milestone for the rail sector.
Developed in collaboration with industry leaders, the Charter sets out a shared commitment to improving gender equity across all parts of the rail industry. The National Transport Commission (NTC) was a proud founding signatory, alongside 50 other organisations. As the organisation behind the National Women in Transport program, the NTC has a strong focus on supporting an innovative and sustainable rail network that allows the participation of people across all genders and background.
By creating more inclusive and supportive workplaces, rail organisations can better reflect the communities they serve and make the most of the skills, perspectives, and ideas that diversity brings.
The Charter outlines five key areas for collective action:
- Inclusive talent acquisition – fair and unbiased recruitment practices.
- Equitable promotion and retention – transparent career pathways and pay equity.
- Embedding policies – flexible, family-friendly and respectful workplaces.
- Visible leadership – genuine commitment from senior leaders.
- Respectful behaviours – safe, inclusive and supportive workplace cultures.
Gender equity is not only a matter of fairness, but also essential to the continued progress and sustainability of transport. A diverse and inclusive workforce strengthens innovation, safety, and performance, creates workplaces where everyone can contribute and succeed.
The NTC is committed to working alongside industry partners to turn these commitments into meaningful, lasting change. All of this work helps to shape a rail sector that is inclusive and ready for the future. You can view the full charter here:
