The June Networking Lunch for National Women in Transport took place in Melbourne and featured a keynote speech from Lisa Annese, CEO of Chief Executive Women. The event focused on gender equality and exploring how women and men can understand each other better and collaborate on a more inclusive and equitable future.
Lisa was joined by Carolyn Walsh, Chair of the National Transport Commission, for an engaging in-conversation session. Together, they shared personal experiences, discussed workplace culture, and reflected on the evolving landscape of the transport industry.

National Women in Transport and Roads Australia are committed to building a transport sector that attracts, engages and retains women as part of a diverse and inclusive future workforce. The 2025 International Women’s Day theme, March Forward, called on us to turn commitment into action — reminding us that true progress toward gender equality requires bold steps, not just reflection.
In the lead-up to the day, a series of events invited participants to learn from the experiences of women leaders in transport—exploring how their stories can help shape a more inclusive industry. From the “loo coup” to the fight for equal pay, this report highlights the programs that shifted the sector, the men who championed change, and the trailblazing women who broke barriers and opened doors for others.
The report also shares insights into how workplaces are evolving and the actions we can all take to maintain momentum — ensuring progress toward a fairer, more equitable transport sector continues.

After being told by a careers adviser, “If you want an apprenticeship, be a hairdresser”, Jo Farrell went on to become a leader in the construction sector.
Today Jo is a champion for women in male-dominated industries, working closely with governments, industry bodies and unions to help them recruit and train women in trade roles.
In her presentation at a Speaker Bureau lunch, Jo urges women to stand up outside their comfort zone to support other women and highlights the importance of male allies to help drive change.
